Remarks and general Information in German: Der berühmte finnische Roman von Johannes Linnankoski, der die Vorlage für diesen Film bildet, wurde insgesamt viermal verfilmt. Stiller war der erste Regisseur, den die Intensität dieser Geschichte gefangen nahm und er suchte sich erstklassige Schauspieler, um dieses klassische Drama der unerwiderten Liebe darzustellen. In jener Szene, in der Olof sich im Spiegel mustert, sieht er zunächst sein eigenes Gesicht. Gleichzeitig aber erkennt er sein inneres Selbst. Diese raffinierte Art, die Entwicklung einer Figur darzustellen, war höchst wirkungsvoll. Auch hier spielt die nordische Natur eine bedeutende Rolle im dramatischen Geschehen. Die riskante Fahrt durch die Stromschnellen flussabwärts wurde zum Markenzeichen des schwedischen Films dieser Zeit; hier sehen wir sie in ihrer berühmtesten Version.
