Synopsis in German
Harry Morgan fährt reiche Feriengäste zum Fischen hinaus auf die See. Eines Tages lernt er Marie kennen, die auf der Insel gestrandet ist und davon träumt, nach Amerika zurückzukehren. Um ihr die Heimreise finanzieren zu können, nimmt Harry den Auftrag an, einem französischen Freiheitskämpfer und dessen Frau zur Flucht zu verhelfen.

Im Zweiten Weltkrieg kontrollieren Vertreter des Vichy-Regimes die französische Antilleninsel Martinique und verfolgen Anhänger General de Gaulles. Ausländer werden misstrauisch überwacht; so auch der Amerikaner Harry Morgan (Humphrey Bogart), der seinen Kabinenkreuzer an reiche Touristen zum Fischfang vermietet. Als ihn der Hotelier Gérard (Marcel Dalio), Anführer der Widerstandsbewegung auf der Insel, für eine illegale Fahrt gewinnen will, lehnt Morgan zunächst ab, er will strikt neutral bleiben. Außerdem interessiert er sich momentan mehr für die junge Amerikanerin Marie (Lauren Bacall), die auf Martinique gestrandet ist.
Erst als Morgan mit den brutalen Methoden von Polizeichef Renard (Dan Seymour) konfrontiert wird, nimmt er widerstrebend den Auftrag an, den Widerstandskämpfer Paul de Bursac (Walter Molnar) und dessen Frau Helen (Dolores Moran) von einer Nachbarinsel nach Martinique zu holen. Bei dem waghalsigen Unternehmen kommt es zu einer Schießerei mit einem Patrouillenboot, bei der de Bursac verwundet wird. Als Morgan später zusammen mit Marie und seinem trinkfreudigen Kumpel Eddie (Walter Brennan) Martinique verlassen will, weil ihm der Boden dort zu heiß wird, hält die Polizei Eddie als Geisel fest. Ohne ihn will Morgan sich aber auf keinen Fall absetzen... (ARD Presse)
