Zwölf Jahre lang hat Lena Jörning (Veronica Ferres) nichts von ihrer Schwester gehört. Auf der Flucht vor der Eintönigkeit des Alltags verließ Evelyn (Janna Striebeck) damals das kleine Dorf. Zurück blieb die Polizistin Lena, widerwillig aber dennoch fest mit der rauen Küstenlandschaft Deutschlands verbunden. Als eine Leiche im Eis der zugefrorenen Ostsee entdeckt wird, muss sie sich der Toten annehmen. Für Lena ein Schock: Es ist nicht nur die erste Leiche ihrer beruflichen Laufbahn, vielmehr erkennt sie ihre Schwester, die eingeschlossen im Eis zu schweben scheint. Das Team der Kriminalpolizei (Detlev Buck und Konstanze Breitebner) reist an, um den Fall zu übernehmen. Viele Fragen gilt es zu klären: Wann ist Evelyn zurück gekehrt und warum weiß Lena nichts davon? Welche Rollen spielen Evelyns Ehemann Claas (Martin Feifel) und Lenas Verlobter Bruno (August Schmölzer) bei dem Todesfall? Die Ermittlungen werden für alle Beteiligten zu einer dramatischen Reise in die Vergangenheit, die - bis dahin unerkennbar für Lena - selbst noch die Gegenwart des ganzen Dorfes überschattet.
