Reviews in German: Den Dichter und Nobelpreisträger Gerhard Hauptmann sieht man zu Beginn des Films, danach wird man dann im gemächlichen Tempo, das deutsche Literaturadaptionen auch heute noch kennzeichnet, die gleichnamige Erzählung Hauptmanns bebildert. Darin geht es um die Liebes-und Literaturverwirrung und schließliche Errettung des Stadtschreibers Lorenz Lubota, das ganze im Stil eines schlesischen Dostojewski. Lange verschollen, ist dies unzweifelhaft einer der schwächeren Filme Murnaus, wenn auch die Kutschfahrt Lubotas, bei der ihn die Häuser zu verfolgen scheinen, einer der stärksten Bildeinfälle des damaligen deutschen Kinos ist.
