Synopsis in German
Nach einem Unfall über den Dächern von San Franciso ist der Polizist John "Scottie" Ferguson traumatisiert. Er leidet unter Höhenangst, muss den Dienst quittieren und verbringt die meiste Zeit bei seiner College-Freundin Midge. Doch dann bittet ihn der Geschäftsmann Gavin Elster, seine Frau zu beobachten. Elster gibt an, Madeleine sei vermutlich von einer Toten besessen, und er habe Angst um ihr Leben. John folgt der attraktiven Blondine auf den kleinen Friedhof einer spanischen Mission zum Grab einer Frau namens Carlotta Valdez und in eine Ausstellung, in dem ein Porträt von eben jener Carlotta Valdez hängt.

Sie war die Geliebte eines reichen Geschäftsmannes, die 1857 Selbstmord beging und zudem Madeleines Urgrossmutter war. John ist fasziniert von Madeleine, er verliebt sich in die geheimnisvolle Schöne. Als sie in der spanischen Mission San Juan Battista den Glockenturm erklimmt, kann John ihr wegen seiner Höhenangst nicht folgen und muss zusehen, wie sie vom Turm stürzt. Jahre später trifft er plötzlich auf das Ebenbild Madeleines. Doch die Frau ist angeblich eine aus Kansas stammende Verkäuferin namens Judy Barton. (3Sat Presse)

«Hitchcock machte es seinem Publikum nicht leicht – der Film floppte 1958 bei Zuschauern und Kritikern. Aber er gehört zu den facettenreichsten Psychothrillern überhaupt. Cop Stewart leidet an Höhenangst und an sich selbst, bis er sich in die geheimnisvolle Kim Novak verliebt. Sie stirbt, und der besessene Stewart formt eine Doppelgängerin nach ihrem Bilde. Die Story ist so verzwickt, dass man den Film nicht nur mehrfach sehen sollte, sondern muss.

Remarks and general Information in German: «"Vertigo" war wegen der Streitigkeiten um Hitchocks Nachlass fast zehn Jahre nicht öffentlich zu sehen. Der Film wurde erst 1983 neu entdeckt und von der Kritik als Hitchocks Meisterwerk gefeiert. In der alle zehn Jahre veranstalteten Umfrage der britischen Filmzeitschrift "Sight and Sound" stiess er 2012 sogar "Citizen Kane" als besten Film aller Zeiten vom Sockel. Der Plot des Thrillers basiert auf einer französischen Romanvorlage, die Hitchcock nach San Francisco verlegte, wo er auch an Originalschauplätzen drehte. Um das Gefühl der Höhenhangst (engl.: vertigo) im Bild umzusetzen, entwickelte Hitchcock mit seinem Kameramann Irmin Roberts eine neue Technik, bei der die Kamera sich in eine Richtung bewegt und in die andere zoomt. Das als "Vertigo-Effekt" bekannte Kunststück wurde danach von den unterschiedlichsten Regisseuren übernommen.» (3Sat Presse)
